About the RCPI, Professional Diploma in Medicine for the Older Person programme:
This Royal College of Physicians of Ireland nine-month Professional Diploma in Medicine for the Older Person, delivered in conjunction with iheed, is a new online learning programme designed specifically to cater for busy healthcare professionals. According to WHO data, the number and proportion of people aged 60 years and older in the population is increasing. In 2019, the number of people aged 60 years and older was 1 billion. This number will increase to 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050. This means that there is a fast-growing need for healthcare staff to have relevant up-to-date training and knowledge within elderly care, to meet the needs of an ageing society. Drawing on the expertise of national and international experts in geriatric care, this programme provides learners with advanced knowledge and skills to ensure patients live a fulfilled later life. The program emphasizes a patient-centered approach to clinical decision-making in medicine for the older person. It provides a supportive, richly informative, and accessible educational opportunity for healthcare professionals wishing to upskill or refresh their understanding of how common geriatric conditions present and are managed.
