Shaping the Future of Skills in the UK: Parliamentary Reception with Lord Blunkett and Key Policymakers

On October 29, 2024, Cambridge Education Group's Chief Academic Officer, Professor Manuel Frutos-Perez PFHEA, joined prominent UK leaders at a parliamentary reception hosted by Policy Connect and the Skills Commission. "What's Next for Skills?" explored a forward-thinking vision for the UK’s skills policy. 

Key speakers, including The Rt Hon. Lord Blunkett, Lauren Edwards MP, Sir John Hayes MP, and Bill Esterson MP, highlighted the need for a dynamic national skills strategy. Emphasis was placed on connecting productivity and growth with lifelong learning, technical training, and an adaptable workforce. 

Lord Blunkett called for a flexible apprenticeship system and reform in levy funding, affirming the government’s commitment to skills sector transformation.  

With announcements expected in the 2024 Autumn Budget, major initiatives like the launch of Skills England—aimed at reducing economic inactivity and supporting workforce development—are on the horizon.
