Dr Helen Thomas

ST5 Paediatric Registrar

Helen graduated from St George’s University of London medical school in 2013, and after a brief stint in rural Norfolk has now been working as a paediatrician in London since 2015. Her specialist interests are paediatric emergency medicine and intensive care. She currently works as a Senior Paediatric Emergency Medicine Fellow and Medical Education Fellow at University College Hospital in central London.

Alongside her clinical role in the Paediatric Emergency Department she is also actively engaged in teaching at every level, and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. In addition to working as a course tutor on this Diploma in Paediatrics, she is also a member of the faculty at UCLH’s well-respected simulation centre, and the lead for UCH’s Paediatric Emergency Department teaching programme. In terms of undergraduate level teaching she has worked for both University College London and St George’s University of London medical schools, organising and delivering simulation teaching and mock clinical examinations, as well as moderating end-of-year examinations.

Helen is a firm believer in “every day should be a learning day” and strives to provide daily educational opportunities for both medical and nursing colleagues and her undergraduate students. She is also a keen advocate for making every clinical interaction with a child and their family an opportunity for health education and promotion, and this can be seen in her family-focused teaching style.
