Premala Subramaniam


Her name is Premala Subramaniam, a clinician with over 15 years’ experience with Ministry of Health Malaysia specialising in older person care for the last 5 years. As an experienced geriatrician in both urban and rural settings, She is passionate about the quality and improvement of care provided for the older person.  In addition to starting the 1st geriatric ward for the state of Sabah together with her excellent multidisciplinary team, she was the clinical lead for the Advanced Diploma in Gerontology Nursing program in Borneo. Now in its second intake, the programme is attracting students from all over Malaysia. 

Her geriatric service in Queen Elizabeth Hospital has expanded from a single clinic to dedicated clinics for dementia and falls, together with dementia counselling sessions specifically designed for carers of people living with dementia.

She approach geriatrics with a realistic perspective that accepts death as part of life.  She tries to help patients and family understand what matters most is quality of life rather than the quantity itself if quality cannot be maintained.

Currently, she works in the with geriatric unit with Raja Perempuan Bainun Hospital in Perak and looking into expansion of services there.
